We are an Activist Company
Our Coffee is
Radical,Delicious,Biodiversity-Friendly,Small Batch Roasted,Equitable,Honest,Single Origin,Organic,Fair Trade

Our purpose is to enable smallholder coffee producers to enjoy secure and stable livelihoods and strengthen coffee farming practices that conserve biodiversity. We invite coffee drinkers to participate in the process.

What makes us Different

We look for collaborative and integrative ways to repair fractures in coffee’s bean to cup journey. Often, we combine scientific research, visual storytelling and the science of coffee to champion the voices and practices of coffee growers who are leading the way in regenerative, beyond-organic agriculture.

  • Our partner farms grow coffee under the shade of forest trees. Our goal is to maintain native tree diversity and tree canopy structure that is closely comparable to surrounding forest. This effort shifts the needle for Indian coffee where recent trends clearly show increased deforestation in coffee landscapes and predominant use of exotics shade trees.

  • We work with some of the most historically marginalised indigenous communities in India who are today, vulnerable to exploitation in global coffee markets. By building long-term, honest, transparent and equal partnerships with smallholder coffee growers, we hope to enable sustainable and secure livelihoods from coffee farming.

  • All our partner farms commit to growing coffee that is free of chemical pesticides and fertilisers. We believe that organic and regenerative coffee farming is not only beneficial to human health but also non-human organisms big and small that use coffee farms for habitat. We are fully transparent with the laboratory tests for our coffee so please do write to us and we would be happy to share this with you.

  • Our restoration effort includes restoring native vegetation in certain farm areas. The science behind our restoration process is derived from traditional ecological knowledge including the planting of select keystone tree species and maintaining other features on farms that could provide habitat for a wide variety of wildlife.

  • Our packaging is fully biodegradable. The outer bag paper bag is not pulp from freshly cut trees (we are unconvinced that pulp from trees is sustainable) but made from waste sugarcane pulp which is a byproduct in the sugar manufacturing process. The inner bag is a biodegradable “plastic” made from a polymer that disintegrates on its own between 8-24 months in landfill conditions and leaves behind no harmful residues.

  • Each cup of coffee can be traced back to the single farm or, at the least, cluster of farms from which the beans were harvested. Importantly, traceability at Black Baza is reciprocal, not just consumer driven. We share general details about where our coffee drinkers are from, their walks of life and coffee drinking habits with our partner producers as much as possible. We believe that this draws meaningful connectedness which eventually allows for more sustainable farming practices. Ask us more if you have questions!

  • Our commitment to sustainable coffee means that we have to meticulously monitor the impact of our involvement. Livelihood-related changes are monitored through questionnaire surveys and focus group discussions. Biodiversity-related changes are monitored through studying select ecological indicator species, such as certain native tree species, birds, insects and soil invertebrates.
