Escaping warped time

Shivani Unakar experiments with a cold brew and condensed milk treatment to COVID-19

Most days I find myself sitting at my work desk, laptop open, scribble pad within reach, drifting off to another time and place. I’ve been daydreaming the way I did in school, of silly and trivial things, things that make me happy.

It feels like we’re stuck in this time warp forever… Calendars have been suspended, events put off indefinitely. But as Karnataka crawls into the first week of May, it seems things might start relaxing soon. I try to imagine what the world will be like when we return to it. The hospitality industry, which many of my friends rely on for employment, on which I did too until recently, is struggling to be optimistic. I wonder if I’ll find myself at a crossroads between unemployment and self-employment, not quite sure what either of those will even mean in the new world.

I park that thought. Think about something else, I tell myself. Just for a while. I walk to the fridge and pour myself a chilled Otter, cold-brewed. And one for my mother with a dash of condensed milk. I return to my work desk, look out at the yellow flowers on the tree just tall enough to reach my first-floor window. And I daydream about something silly and trivial.
